  • 5 myths about education technology debunked
In this blog post, instructional technology specialist Andrew Marcinek dispels five myths he has identified about one-to-one computing. They include that "digital natives" need technology, the iPad is a tool similar to a hammer and technology is not a distraction. Marcinek also writes that offering textbooks on digital devices is not a challenge that cannot be overcome and that using the iPad in one-to-one programs does not teach brand loyalty. • Are tablets better than textbooks?
Tablet computers are making their mark in the classroom. However, this article examines whether tablets are better than textbooks and why the technology might carry some hidden costs. The Federal Communications Commission is estimating that tablets could save schools about $3 billion, and while questions have been raised over the ability of schools' infrastructure to handle the technology, many are betting tablets will help improve learning. • Texas district uses technology to track students
A school district in Texas is testing the use of a "radio frequency identification" tracking system that can locate students through technology embedded into personal identification cards. Officials say the technology has allowed the test schools to locate students -- in class -- who had been incorrectly labeled as absent, and recover attendance-based funding that otherwise might have been lost. Students also use the cards, which have drawn some criticism, to access their meal accounts and check out library books. San Antonio Express-News (10/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • Calif. districts have access to unused technology funds
In California, $66 million in technology vouchers for schools are set to expire next year, leading officials to remind districts to use it or lose it. The funding is part of a $1.1 billion antitrust settlement with Microsoft approved in 2004. Districts seeking to access their share of the settlement must spend their own money up front and then request a reimbursement. The funds do not have to be spent on Microsoft products. • School uses Edmodo to facilitate summer learning
Over the summer, a school used the free Web tool Edmodo to keep students learning when school was closed. The program, Summer Knappmodo, included weekly topics, such as writing thank-you letters, book recommendations and the Olympic Games. The technology and the format allowed students to start discussions online using the social-networking tool, and enabled teachers and parents to observe. • Parents raise concerns over cafeteria palm scanners
A Maryland school district will begin to use palm scanners to help students access their meal accounts in the cafeteria. However, some parents are criticizing the use of the infrared technology, saying they have concerns over privacy. So far, 20% of parents have declined to allow their children to participate in program. The district is testing the PalmSecure system in three schools now, and is expected to expand the program systemwide within a year and a half.
